4am and Awake

General Ramblings, Living In Portugal No Comments

It’s 4am ish and I’m awake.  Not just going to the loo awake, but up, bouncing, alive awake.  It’s so very annoying.  It’s not even approaching day break and there’s no sense that anyone else in the village is doing anything as silly as being awake at this time, so what am I doing up?

To be frank, I have no idea.  I love my bed, it’s a great place to be.  And I love sleeping; pity I’m not awake to enjoy it, as my dad would say.  I’ve been thinking for the last 30mins whether to get up or not.  And then there was the decision as to whether to get productive and get online or just to make a cup of tea and read.  But it’s too cold in the kitchen, so here I am.

  1. Why is this happening? I’m such a heavy sleeper.
  2. Is there too much or too little alcohol in my system?
  3. Should I stay in bed and fight the urge to be asleep or should I get up and be productive?
  4. If this happens regularly, should I embrace the change in my body clock?
  5. If #4 happens, the problem I have is work.  Clients expect me to be available between 9am-5pm.  If I am up and about at 4am, it’s unlikely I’m still going to be useful by lunch!
  6. The house is cold.  There’s no central heating and I’m not starting a fire.
  7. Could it be my hormones..?

The Good, The Bad And The Ugly of Working From Home

General Ramblings No Comments

I’ve been at this working from home lark for some time now, although my home seems to change from one year to the next.  Setting up Red Box was very much a necessity, as when Lawrence and I relocated to Portugal in 2004, neither of us had a job lined up, nor could we speak reasonable Portuguese to go and find one.

So although my view from my office window has changed (and is about to again!), the positives and not so positive aspects still apply:

The Good

  • There’s no commute! How I do not miss the Northern Line.  Tooting Broadway to Tottenham Court Road, Monday to Friday, wind, rain and shine.
  • I get up when it’s daylight and not before.  Ugh, winter mornings.  Need I say more?
  • The dress code is my own. Okay, I was never the type to use a power suit, but coming to work in woolly slippers definitely has its advantages.
  • Household Chores are spread over the week, not just the weekend. How I managed to keep a clean, tidy house, prepare meals, be sociable and have a full time job, I’ll never know.  Maybe somethings slipped…
  • The rent on the office space is very reasonable. There’s nothing to pay in overheads above and beyond what I’m paying for utilities & I can choose which room to use as my office instead of getting the cubby hole at the back of the building.

The Bad

  • There are very few water-cooler moments. I do miss the camaraderie of an office.  Some of my greatest friendships have been formed through work and it’s where I met my husband.
  • Self discipline is key.  I’m not so sure this is a bad thing.  However, working for oneself and by oneself does mean that I have to be very disciplined about the hours I spend working and billing and what can be classed as ‘down time’.  If I don’t work, we don’t eat.  Simple!
  • Household chores can be very tempting. If I’m having a bad morning or have no taste for a particular job, it’s very tempting to think, “I can put the washing on,” “didn’t the cat need to go to the vet,” “I’m sure I can get some groceries” and so on.
  • Once immersed, it’s hard to come up for air.  If I’m loving a project, 2, 3 hours can go by without me stopping for a cuppa or taking a walk.  Not healthy by any stretch of the imagination.
  • Weekend working. I did promise myself and Lawrence that there would be at least one day a week where there’s no work.  No emails, no phone calls, no just-taking-a-look-to-see-if…  Yeah, right!

The Ugly

  • Me in my pyjamas at 10am. There’s no way that I am getting a webcam!

Ryanair to abolish check-in at airports

The no-frills airline has introduced a 3 phase move to 100% online check in.

From March 19 passengers with hold luggage will be allowed to check in online but will be charged a web check-in fee of £5 per person per flight in addition to the £9.50 it costs to check a bag into the hold. Passengers wishing to use airport check-in desks from March 19 will be charged a fee of £10.

From May 1 all passengers will be charged £5 to use its online check-in service, while the charge for registering at the airport will go up from £10 to £20. It plans to scrap its airport check-in desks altogether from October, with all customers checking-in online.

Ryanair recently announced that it intended to charge passengers £1 to use its toilets! One of our customers joked that “there is more leg room in the toilet!” Ryanair quickly changed it’s mind about the charge after receiving a lot of negative feedback.

The airline has also adopted a strict policy on hand luggage, charging £30 if it exceeds the maximum size and not allowing duty-free purchases as additional luggage.
Security deposits (Economy Car Hire statement) K&S

A security deposit will normally be taken when collecting your vehicle in case of damage to uninsured items such as wheels, tyres, glass and the under body. However, in some cases this deposit can be waivered by taking out additional insurance directly with our car rental partner. Please note that if you take out our top-up insurance you may still be required to leave a security deposit when collecting the vehicle.

It would appear that Ryanair are trying to squeeze EVERY last penny out of us poor passengers BUT just keeping the cost below the schedule airline prices!!!

Looking for the Bear Necessities

I belong to Xing and we get so many wonderful and interesting articles on there that I’d like to share with you.

This is from Vered Neta

So many of us, women, are struggling with balance between our career and family life. The truth us that with today’s speedy times and technology it’s not just women that are struggling with this issue but also men. Whenever I find myself out of breath and out of time too many times, I know that it’s time to go back to things I used to do in childhood. I go out to the movies… usually the same movie that will remind me how to balance life.

You see, when I was young, creating a balanced life was easy. Being single, I had all the time in the world for myself.
It was easy to put borders, to know when to stop working and change gear into fun and relaxation mode. I had everything under control. Work, studies, boyfriend, social arena and even the household was no great challenge…

But somewhere along the way, I found the work that I love, the boyfriend turned into life partner and a daughter appeared on the scene… Suddenly I found myself saying again and again, “I would have cleaned the house, but after dealing with work, kid, spouse and social commitments, I just can’t do another thing!”

Sound familiar? Don’t worry – you’re not alone. Most of us have been there at one time or another. Of course, if the only thing you don’t get done is cleaning the house, then things are probably going pretty well. What about those times, however, when your energy level dips so low that even an evening at the movies sounds like too much effort?

That’s the time that I call on my good old friend Baloo, the wonderful bear from Disney’s version of the Jungle book.
He had a wonderful saying (a beautiful song) that since then I have adopted as a life theme. His advise for keeping a balanced life is, “Look for the bear necessities, the simple bear necessities, forget about your problems…”

And this is precisely what I do to maintain the balance in my life that I long for.

I actively look for those things that give me energy. Energy is the basic thing that we need in order to have a balanced life. Therefore I make sure that my level of energy is maintained as high as possible.
I reduce and even omit those things that deplete my energy reserves, and I choose to devote more time to those things that give my energy a boost.

I managed to drop many activities that I consciously didn’t realize were draining my energy. However, once I stopped doing them, I noticed how my life became much more energized.

Watching TV and reading the daily paper. OUT!
Over commitment to projects and assignments. NO MORE!
Unrealistic deadlines. NO WAY!
Social gatherings that are not really important for me. I call in sick…
‘Professional complainers, victims and martyrs’. I fired them!

Look at your own life. What activities, people and circumstances drain your energy? Which of these can you minimize or even give them up completely?

On the other hand, discover what energizes you. Then do your best to put those things on top of your TO DO list.

For me these energy givers can be meditating for an hour a day, exercising, working in the garden, or taking a nap in the afternoon. I do my utmost to do at least one of these daily. This brings me back to harmony and balance.

Always try to boost your energy. It does not have to be a big move…
Walking instead of taking the car gives you a chance to breathe and connect with your body.
Using the public transportation instead of the car gives you more time to be with yourself.

I learned another thing from Baloo the bear. Always look for the simple things. Stop complicating your life.
Drop all your conditioned, social and parental ’shoulds’, ‘coulds’ and ‘woulds’:
“I should buy a new car…” “I could do it better…” “It would be great if…”
Be as simple as a child, consume less, create more…

As old Baloo says, “Get with the beat and start to look for the Bear Necessities…”

Things I Have Done – Jobs

General Ramblings No Comments

Just thinking the other day of places I’ve been and things I have done, I thought about the jobs I have worked at.  Strange to think that for the best part of 25 years, I’ve been in gainful (or otherwise) employment.

So in no particular order, here are the jobs I remember that I have done:

  • Worked in a Newsagent
  • Picker & packer for a pharmaceutical company
  • Waitress/sandwich maker
  • Jilleroo
  • Grape Picker
  • Nanny
  • House sitter/dog walker/bird feeder/horse exerciser etc.
  • Housekeeper
  • Office manager
  • Receptionist
  • Post woman
  • VA/Business Owner
  • Real estate vendor
  • PA

I think that’s it!  Of course, it doesn’t take into account the different hats I wear daily; chef, housekeeper, vet etc.

I used to make posts about what was on my nightstand.  These days, my books are dotted around the flat and I read different things depending on the time of day, where I am etc.

So, right now, my bedtime reading is the Rough Guide Morocco (trying to plan a trip there this year, but…), down time from Red Box work I have Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s  first volume of his autobiography ‘Living To Tell The Tale‘ and for lunchtimes on the balcony, Reader’s Digest Guide to Gardening!
